How Much Did Crawley’s Councillors Receive in 2025/26?

Full Context examined the official allowance records for every councillor representing Crawley at borough and county level.

Crawley Town Hall
Crawley Town Hall.

Councillors are not paid a conventional salary, but they receive allowances for carrying out their elected roles. Some also receive Special Responsibility Allowances (SRAs) for additional duties such as council leadership, Cabinet membership or certain committee positions.

For this analysis, Full Context has counted only Basic Allowance and Special Responsibility Allowance. Travel and subsistence expenses and carers’ allowances have been excluded completely. Individual recipients of carers’ allowances are not identified here.

The figures cover 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 and are the amounts the councils say were actually paid, rather than estimates based on the allowance schemes.

Why do the amounts vary?

A full-year CBC councillor generally received a basic allowance of £7,753. At WSCC the standard basic allowance was £14,912. Many councillors received only the relevant basic allowance; others received an SRA because they held additional responsibilities.

At CBC, Leader Michael Jones received £7,753 basic allowance plus an £18,611.88 SRA, giving £26,364.88 in the categories counted here. Several Cabinet members received an additional £9,305.45, while smaller SRAs were paid for other responsibilities.

At county level, Richard Burrett received £14,912 basic plus a £10,892 SRA, giving £25,804. Chris Oxlade received £14,912 plus an £8,609 SRA, giving £23,521. Duncan Crow and Bob Lanzer each received £14,912 basic plus a £24,897 SRA from WSCC, giving £39,809 each from the county council.

Serving on both councils

Three councillors in the records received allowances from both authorities during 2025/26. Brenda Burgess received £22,665 across CBC and WSCC in the categories counted here. Bob Lanzer received £47,562, while Duncan Crow received £53,646.37.

These are separate elected offices with separate allowance schemes. The combined figures do not in themselves indicate anything improper; they show the effect of one person holding elected positions at two levels of local government.

From the basic allowance upwards

At one end of the figures are numerous CBC councillors who received the standard £7,753 basic allowance and no SRA. At the other are councillors holding additional responsibilities, particularly those simultaneously serving at county level.

That is why Full Context has published the complete Crawley dataset rather than selecting councillors solely because their payments were particularly high or low.

How we calculated this

Included: Basic Allowance and Special Responsibility Allowance.
Excluded: travel and subsistence expenses and carers’ allowances.
Period: 1 April 2025–31 March 2026.
Sources: official CBC and WSCC individual members’ allowance returns.

The CBC notice contains a small number of basic-allowance figures that differ from the standard £7,753. Full Context has reproduced the council’s published figures rather than reclassifying them.
